Orientation Program

The Horse as the Teacher
Our four-hour orientation program is segmented into multiple 30-minute to one-hour sessions. Each of the sessions involves horsemanship skills, demonstrations, groundwork exercises and voluntary participation. Participants learn about the history and nature of the horse. In short, participants discover what we have in common with horses, what they can teach us about our perceptions and beliefs about ourselves and the world. Many life lessons come from working with a 1,200-pound animal—lessons about confronting fear, earning respect, building trust, doing your best and enjoying the rewards of hard work. Whether it’s grooming, training or riding, participants begin to explore the relationship with the horse as a teacher, partner and confidant.

To ensure safety and the highest-quality riding experience, each participant is guided by a lead volunteer and two side riders who walk along beside the veteran participant to help with balance and the first steps of proper riding skills.

In a few short hours, by understanding and working with these beautiful, magnificent animals, participants experience personal revelations and positive changes that materially affect the way they perceive the world. For instance, participants learn that one of the horse’s greatest attributes comes from his unconditional desire to try and he shows us that in the process of trying we realize all that is possible. Participants leave with a new self-awareness and enthusiasm about their ability to lead, reach their potential and enjoy life.

Beyond the Orientation Program

After completing the orientation program, veterans may enroll in subsequent classes that provide greater interaction with the horses, advanced riding skills and more in-depth Wisdom of the Horse leadership philosophies. Through additional classes, veterans also learn ways to apply military leadership experience to civilian life and, at the same time, build lasting friendships with fellow veterans of all ages and walks of life.
